Art News: Satoshi's Bliss
Among the many emails, websites, MP3s, art works and QuickTime movies from all over the
When you see so much beauty and creative energy around you, it is difficult to pick the one that truly speaks to your soul, as your soul becomes kind of drunken by such a restless wave of Art. Back in May, I received this brief email by a multimedia artist from Japan. Buried among hundreds of emails, it set through my cluttered inbox for a few days. During that time I was conducting a research on the number and profiles of websites around the world that embraced the concept of peace in the form of art.
“The type of business of my company is "Graphic signs". My stuff is making very big signs usually…sometimes we wrap the prints around the building-walls…The sizes of each Photoshop data on my Power Mac G5 are close to 5GB. And when merging layers, the final tiff data is still 2GB. I print everything with an Epson 10000 or Roland SC-600 as 350ppi. The digital data is very big. Every print might take from 3 to 10 hours” From Satoshi’s first InterComm Chat. What struck me about Satoshi is his passion for his craft, the fact that he feels he can go on with his work as long as he lives, to put it in his own words “because I feel that I am watching beautiful things on this planet and compositing them on my Mac everyday…” Although I never met Satoshi in person, I was able to discover his genuine creative soul through his art on the net. Japan was simply too far away and not in my schedule for this project.
We have been corresponding via email, exchanging ideas on peace, love for nature and life, - what more can you say in words, than those heavenly images cannot? But often found it difficult when Satoshi wished to share attachments for size and compatibility issues. Most recently we had to exchange ideas and plans in regards to video content for a Solo Exhibit in Roppongi, Japan, running the entire month of July 2004. And email has been a headache: letters showing up as “question marks” and images/videos that were too large to be emailed… InterComm allowed us to set up a time for an interview. I was able to save the chat and to write this article to be sent as an entry for an upcoming International Art Exhibit in San Francisco. Satoshi was able to upload in no time his beautiful composites that I then downloaded and included in the story. Satoshi was born in Japan where he lives and traveled extensively to Hawaii, where he shot over 1800 pictures just during his last visit in May. He is an outstanding photographer and compositor for several years. He uses Adobe Photoshop, Motion and FCP to create stunning compositing of natural beauty. He then develops camera raw files to tiff files, cutting out each part to prep them for compositing. This type of process can take up to 100 days to complete, depending on the subject.
A few months later he gave the iBook to his wife, and he purchased a 450MHz G4, a Power Book G3 800Mhz and a dual 1.25GB Power Mac G4. Since then, he has been working and studying an average of 12 hours a day, 5 days a week, sometimes more. To speed up and improve his workflow, he also purchased a Power Mac G5, a great addition to his office, overflowing with unlimited talent. Satoshi’s hard work has been recognized in Tokyo, Roppongi and Shinagawa, as far as the prestigious Soho district in New York. He is also planning a visit with his family to the West coast next year. ![]() Mt. Kualoa – Satoshi Matsuyama © 2005
